Description

(54) APPARATUS FOR AND A METHOD OF APPLYING AN ANNULAR DECORATIVE MARKING TO A VEHICLE TYRE (71) We, TIRE CUSTOMIZING LIMITED, a British Company of "Elmwood", Broadley Common, Nazeing, Essex, England, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to apparatus for, and a method of, applying an annular decorative marking to a vehicle tyre.
A concentric white band on each of the tyres of a vehicle is a popular form of decorative marking of motor vehicles and is commonly referred to as 'whitewalling'. The provision of such markings, if they are to be durable, is somewhat difficult and it is an object of the present invention to provide a method and apparatus which facilitate the application of such markings.
The present invention provides a method of applying an annular decorative marking to the sidewall of a vehicle tyre, the method comprising the steps of rotating the tyre in situ on the vehicle, abrading the surface of the sidewall of the rotating tyre along an annular band co-axial with the tyre, introducing marking fluid on to the annular band, the fluid being such that it sets to provide an annular decorative band on the sidewall of the tyre.
It will be appreciated that some care is necessary when abraiding the sidewall of a tyre to ensure that only a small amount of the tyre surface is removed so that the tyre is not weakened.
The invention also provides apparatus for carrying out the method including means for rotating a vehicle tyre in situ on the vehicle about the axis of the tyre, a power driven abrading tool adapted to be applied to the sidewall of a vehicle tyre to produce an annular abraded band.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings. In the drawings: Figure 1 is a schematic illustration of an apparatus in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 2 is an illustration of a fluid applicator for use as part of the apparatus of Figure 1.
Referring to Figure 1, apparatus for applying circular markings to the sidewalls of vehicle tyres includes two electric motors 1 and 2. The motor 1 is connected to a horizontal drive shaft la connected via a belt drive to a driven shaft 3 and is capable of tuming the shaft 3 in either direction, while the motor 2 is connected to a horizontal drive shaft 4 for rotation in a single direction only.
The two motors 1 and 2 are enclosed within a housing 5 having two openings near the base thereof and through a respective one of which each of the shafts 3 and 4 extends. The housing 5 has a seat 6 connected through its upper surface to receive in a seated position a person operating the machine so that the operator may comfortably operate the machine and stability is provided to the machine.
The shaft 4 is connected via a covered flexible shaft 7 and a covered short rigid shaft 11 to an abrading wheel 8 which is driven by the shaft 7. The axial width of the wheel 8 is chosen so that it corresponds to the width of the markings to be applied to the tyre.
Different widths of markings are obtained by changing the wheel 8 for others of different axial widths. The circumferential surface of the wheel 8 is covered with abrasive material so that the surface may be used to abrade an annular band in the wall of a tyre when the wheel 8 is rotating. The short rigid shaft 11 that connects the flexible shaft 7 with the abrading wheel passes through an opening in a metal hand guard 9. The covering of the shaft 11 is secured within the opening in the hand guard and to the surface of the hand guard by a support strut 12. The hand guard 9 is fabricated from sheet metal and is curved partially around the wheel 8 to shield an operator from the abrading wheel. The hand guard has a handle 10 fixed to its convex surface for use by an operator of the apparatus to enable the abrading wheel 8 to be manipulated by moving the hand guard 9.
The shaft 3 is connected to a ribbed shaft 13 having a length approximately equal to the axial width of a vehicle tyre. The ribbed shaft 13 is adapted to be placed in contact with the circumferential surface of a tyre to rotate the tyre.
The method by which markings are applied to the tyre will now be described. The vehicle whose tyres are to be marked is jacked up in the vicintiy of one of the tyres so that this tyre is raised from the ground.
The apparatus is positioned close to the tyre so that the ribbed shaft 13 is axial to the tyre and touches the lower circumferential surface of the tyre as shown in the figure. The operator is required to sit on the seat 6 and he may then operate the motor 1 to rotate the shaft 13 and hence the tyre and wheel of the vehicle.
The motor 2 is then switched on to rotate the abrading wheel 8 and the circumferential surface of the wheel 8 is applied to the sidewall of the tyre at the position where a circular marking is required. The wheel 8 is applied so that it is rotating in the opposite direction to the tyre with the result that the abrasive material on the wheel 8 roughens an annular band in the sidewall of the tyre. Slight additional pressure on the hand guard 9 by the operator will result in a slight annular groove being formed in the sidewall having a depth of a few thousandths of an inch. Such a groove may provide a receiving channel for marking material to be applied if such is found necessary.
The abrading wheel 8 is then moved away from the tyre and the sidewall of the tyre is cleaned. With the wheel of the vehicle still being rotated by the ribbed shaft 13 white rubber solution is applied along the roughened band. The rubber solution is then left to dry providing the tyre with a decorative annular white band on its outer sidewall.
The rubber solution is preferably applied using an applicator as shown in Figure 2. The applicator comprises a flexible plastics bottle container 15 having a screw cap 16. The screw cap 16 has two lugs 17 extending upwardly from opposite sides of the upper surface of the cap. A roller 18 is mounted on a spindle extending between the lugs. The screw cap has an opening in the form of a slot on its upper surface so that when the container 15 is tilted downwards and a slight pressure is applied to the container, rubber solution with which the container is filled will emerge through the slit on to the roller 18 for application to the tyre.
It will be appreciated that the apparatus is a compact arrangement the motors being enclosed within the housing 5 so that the whole apparatus may be transported easily on a trolley for ease of use.
