Connected to source of high or low pressure.- Two or more packing boxes A, A', for the same or different turbines, have two or more steam spaces r, s, r<1>, s<1>, the outer space of each box being connected to the inner space of the other box by pipes c, c<1>, controlled by valves d, d'. Either the pressure p or the pressure p<1> way be the higher, and the packing acts in the same manner when the turbine is reversed. The valves d, d<1> are so adjusted that the leakage from the high-pressure box is equally divided between the terminal drain pipe a or a<1> and the lowpressure box. The pipes c<1>, c can be connected to high-pressure steam and to vacuum, if necessary, by means of branch pipes f<1>, e<1>, e, f controlled by valves.
