Abstract

The mounting device has a basic frame (1) which is connected to the field sprayer (3) and on which an intermediate frame (7) is pivotably mounted, whilst the pivot axis (10) pointing in the direction of travel is located in the upper region of the intermediate frame. The middle part (13) of the spray linkage (14) is arranged on the intermediate frame (7) so as to be movable in rotation about a bolt (11) extending in the direction of travel. The bolt (11) is located at a distance below the pivot axis (10) of the intermediate frame and in the region of the centre line drawn in the direction of travel through the centre of gravity (16) of the spray linkage. Resilient damping buffers (22, 25) are provided between the basic frame (1) and the intermediate frame (7) and between the latter and the middle part (13) of the spray linkage. These measures ensure that the spray linkage is constantly held parallel to the level of the ground surface even when the field sprayer is used on uneven ground and in hilly terrain. <IMAGE>

Description

(54) A FIELD SPRAYER OR SPRAYING APPARATUS (71) We, AMAZONEN-WERKE H.
DREYER GmbH & Co. KG of 4507 Hasbergen-Gaste, Postbox 109, Federal Republic of Germany; a German company do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, td be particularly described in and by the following statement::- The present invention relates to a field sprayer or field spraying apparatus including a spray boom and means for attaching said boom to the main body of the apparatus containing the storage container, said means comprising a basic frame coupled to the field spraying apparatus and onto which frame an intermediate frame is pivotally mounted on the side averted from the storage container of the field spray and mounted in such a manner that the pivotal axis extending in the direction of travel is located in an upper region of the intermediate frame, and wherein the central part of the spray boom is rotatably mounted on the intermediate frame with resilient elements being provided between the central part and the base frame.
A field sprayer or spraying apparatus is already disclosed in German Offenlegungsschrift 2160227, wherein a central part of the spray boom is suspended on an intermediate frame by means of two struts extending diagonally outwards from the intermediate frame and which struts are hingedly mounted both on the intermediate frame and on the central part. Moreover, simple coiled compression or thrust springs are provided as resilient elements. The intermediate frame is connected to a hydraulic cylinder located on the basic frame and the intermediate frame and hence the central part of the spray boom may be pivotally moved by means of this cylinder.Since the hydraulic cylinder is controlled by sensor elements located at both ends of the spray boom with spaced relationship over the ground, the spray boom automatically assumes, in a favourable manner even when using the field spray in hilly terrain, a position parallel to the ground surface. This parallel positioning of the spray linkage is absolutely necessary so that due to varying distances of the individual spray nozzles on the spray boom from the ground and from the plants to be sprayed respectively, inaccuracies of the spray media distribution can be avoided. Moreover, fluctuations of the spray boom arising from an uneven ground may be compensated.
An adverse feature, however, is that in this known attachment device, the aforesaid compensation occupies a considerable time period because the existing wound tension and compression springs do not exhibit vibration damping. Also, the adaptation of the spray boom to the given terrain requires a longer period of time, since the sensor elements are spaced from the ground at about 30 cm so that when spraying pesticides over the ground or onto low vegetation, the spray boom has first of all to assume an inclined position relative to the ground surface or the vegetation to be sprayed respectively before operating the control switch for controlling the hydraulic cylinder and after the control valve can be returned by the hydraulic cylinder into a position parallel with the level of the ground surface. However, inaccuracies in the spraying medium distribution on the ground or on the plants to be sprayed is unavoidable during these time periods required for the compensation of the fìuctua- tions and for adapting the spray boom to the terrain. With use in hilly terrain with frequently changing slope inclinations or on highly irregular ground surface, such may lead to the required parallel position of the spray boom never being reached. An aggrevating feature also is that with the inclined position of the basic frame, the centre part and hence the whole spray boom is laterally displaced, whereby a further danger of irregular distribution of the spray medium exists. An equally long period is also required by the removal of the inclined position of the spray boom produced during the torques occurring when making a narrow turn, as for example is necessary at the ends of fields.
Finally, the arrangement of the hydraulic cylinder with the hydraulic hoses required therefore, the contact switches, the control valve. and the sensor elements, produces a particularly costly arrangement.
It is an object of the invention to improve the known attachment device in such a manner that with the aid of simple means the spray boom is constantly retained parallel to the level of the ground surface even when using the. field spray on uneven ground surface and in hilly terrains.
According to the present invention there is provided a field sprayer or spraying apparatus including a spray boom and means for attaching said boom to the main body of the apparatus containing the storage container, said means- comprising a basic frame connected to the main body of the spraying apparatus and having an interrnediate frame pivotally mounted on the side of said basic frame remote from the normal: position of a storage container with the pivotal axis of the intermediate frame extending in the normal direction of travel of the spraying apparatus and being located in an upper region of the intermediate frame; a central part of the spray boom being rotatably mounted on the intermediate frame and provided with resilient elements acting between the central part and the basic frame, wherein said central part of the spray boom is rotatably mounted on the intermediate frame on a pivot pin extending in the direction of travel and located with spacing below the pivotal axis of the intermediate frame and in the region of the medial line drawn through the centre of gravity 'of the spray boom and wherein said resilient elements have a vibration absorbing or damping effect.Herewith the term vibration damping is to be understood such that the stress-elongation values of the resilient elements form a hysteresis loop.
Due to these measures the spasmodically fluctuating movements of' the basic frame caused by the unevenesses of the ground can effect the central part to only such a minimal extent and hence the spray boom that the slight fluctuations still transmitted are absorbed or immediately removed again by the resilient elements provided with vibration damping. Cbnsequently with a speedily occurring inclination of the basic frame normal relative to the direction of travel as occurs when being used in hilly terrain, the central part automatically follows this movement so that the spray boom assumes a constantly parallel position relative to- the level to the ground. surface.Additionally, in both operations, it is of particular advantage that the spray boom is unable to shift sideways relative to the basic frame so that the symmetry of the spray path relative to the central longitudinal axis ofthe field spray is always maintained. For the same reason, the spray boom. even when. carried quickly around a narrow bend assumes only a slight inclination which is immediately compensated on completion of the travel. round the bend.A particular important feature also resides in that the rapid fluctuation compensation on the one hand and the equally rapids automatic adjustment of the spray boom on a slope inclination on the. other hand is fully dependent upon the required ground clearance of the spray boom required for the given spray operation, so that the attachment device may be used without the slightest modification in the same manner for operating the field spray for spreading liquid fertilisers and pesticides both over the ground and the already growing vegetation.
Furthermore non-metal shock. absorbers are provided as resilient elements. This rneasure provides the additional advantage that the resilient elements are maintenance free and cannot be affected by the corrosive fertiliser and pesticide agents. It has herewith provided expedient for the non-metallic.
damping buffers to be located on both sides of the pin between the basic frame and the intermediate frame and the central part of the spray boom.
If shock absorbers are connected on the one hand on both sides of the pivotal. axis on the basic frame and on the central part of the spray linkage on the other hand, there thus occurs a further damping of the impact transmission caused by the unevenesses of the ground from the basic frame to the central part, so that the spray boom itself assumes a quiet or stable position parallel to the level of the ground surface at a high operating speed. The same advantage is attained by having a steering damper connected on one side of the pivotal axis on the basic frame and on the central part of the spray boom.
Provision is made, moreover, in accordance with the invention for the central part to be connected to the intermediate frame via a ball-and-socket joint located in the centre of gravity of the spray boom and for guide elements to be provided: between the basic frame and the central part of the spray boom link-shaped. This provides compensation of unavoidable manufacturing limits in the rotatable location of the central part, and also prevents the spray boom swinging-to and fro in the direction of travel during considerable pitching movements of the field spray.
If in accordance with the invention the basic frame is mounted on the field spraying apparatus resiliently in a vertical plane, then travel vibrations acting on the spray'boom at high operating speeds are absorbed thus permitting a favourably light method of construction of the spray boom. The same effect is attained by the central part of the spray . boom being arranged over the inter mediate frame on the basic frame so as to be resilient in a vertical; plane. In this case the resilient elements need to be provided: only on the mounting of the basic frame or be tween the basic; frame and: tELe intermediate frame or the intermediate frame and the central part The invention will be described further, by way of example. with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a rear elevation of a field sprayer or spraying apparatus parked on the ground; Fig. 2 is a side view of the apparatus of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a section taken along the.line.A-R of Fig. 1.
