Abstract

158,664. Darwin, R. Nov. 7, 1919. Vices.-In vices of the kind pivoted on a vertical axis and also hinged about an horizontal axis, a further pivot is provided which is normally vertical so that one pivot is below and the other above the horizontal hinge; a locking-device is employed for the hinge members, and the vice is detachably mounted on the upper pivot. A vice D of known construction is provided on its underside with slots D<3>, D<2>. the latter having an undercut side D<4>, engaging lugs C<14>, C<15> on a table C<10>, a screw C<16> locking the vice to the table C<10> which is formed with a spigot C<9> pivotally mounted within a recess C' in a member C and locked in adjusted position by a clamping-block C<12> forced against a groove C<11> in the spigot by a screw C". The member C is provided with a projection C<2> hinged by a bolt B<10> between lugs B' of a member B pivotally mounted in a base A by a spigot B<2> and locked in adjusted position by a clamping-block B<5> and screw B<7>. The bolt B<10> is fixed to the lugs B<3> and has a toothed head B<12> normally engaging teeth on a curved member C<4> slidably mounted by a squared part C<6> in the member C and releasable from the teeth B<12> by a rod C<3> against the action of a spring C<7> whereby the upper part of the hinge may be tilted and locked in tilted position. A circular part of the member B may be provided with an index mark to register with graduations on a bevelled edge A<4>, for use in locating the member B in angular position with respect to the base A.
