Abstract

158,477. Collins, W. G., and Cambridge & Paul Instrument Co., Ltd. April 15, 1920. Squares are provided with bubble level-indicators to enable the accuracy of the squares to be checked both during and after finishing. A square has three plane faces a, b, c, and a stiff web h, the faces a, c being parallel and at rightangles to the face b. Mounted adjacent to the faces a, c are bubble levels d, e provided with lugs j which are adjustably supported on studs k. The levels can be observed through apertures f, g. In finishing the square, the face c is trued and placed on an accurate surface plate; the face a is then tested and finished by the aid of a separate sensitive level placed on it. The face b is then applied to the truly plane surface of an angle plate placed on the surface plate, first with the face a and then with the face c uppermost, the faces a and c being kept clear of the surface plate. The face b is then trued until equal readings are obtained from the levels d, e. The levels also enable accurate determination of the degree of accuracy of the work to which the square is applied to be effected. The web h is preferably provided with an ebonite &c. handle i to prevent distortion of the square by the heat of the hand.
