Description
(54) CONTAINER CONSTRUCTION
(71) We. MARDON PACKAGING INTERNATIONAL LIMITED. a British Company of Clifton Down, Bristol BS8 SIIJ. do hereby declare the invention. for which we priy that a patent may be granted to us, no the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to a container construction. in partictlar to a construction comprising a container housed in an outer casing.
According to the present invention there is provided a container construction comprising a colltaillel housed in a stiff outer casing having a first wall provided with a first aperture. and the container comprising a body portion, a neck portion and a closure member. the neck portion projecting through the first aperture to locate its mouth end portion outside the casing for reception of the closure member. wherein an edge portion of the first aperture is adjacent a peripheral portion of the neck portion.
whereby a portion of the first wall defining said edge portion may be gripped between the closure member and the body portion of the container when the closure member is applied io the neck portion.
The closure member and the exterior of the neck portion are preferably provided with co-operating cre-- threads.
Preferablv. a second 'ill not the casing is provided with or is arranged to provide. a second aperture. whereby the container may be inserted through the second aperture into the casing so that the neck portion projects through the first aperture.
Preferably the first and second walls have in edge in common. the first aperture extends into the first wall from said edge and the second aperture is continuous with the first aperture. extending into the second wall from said edge.
The first aperture preferably converges inwardly from said edge. the innermost portion of the first aperture being shaped to partially embrace the neck portion of the container.
The second wall may be provided by flaps hinged to adjacent third and fourth walls, of the casing whereby when the flaps are open the container may be slid sideways into the casing.
The container may be a thin-walled plastics bottle.
The invention will now be described merely by way of example with refercnce to the accompanying drawings in which, Figure I is an exploded perspective view of a container construction according to the invention. comprising a container and an outer casing.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the construction of Figure I when the container is within the casing, and, Figure 3 is a plan view of a blank for the outer casing of Figures I and 2.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 there is shown a container construction 9 comprising a rectangular bottle or container 10 made of thin or flimsy plastics material such as polyethylene or polypropylene, and a stiff rectangular fibreboard carton or casing 20 which is dimensioned to fit closely round the bottle 10.
The bottle 10 is provided with a cylindrical neck 11 projecting from the middle of one end 12 of the bottle. The neck 11 is provided with screw threading (not shown) to receive a screw @@p or closure member 13.
The ca pn 20 comprises side walls 21-24 and top and bottom end walls 25, 26 respecth.elv. Side wall 21 is provided by overlapping flaps 21a. 21b hinged to side walls 22 and 24 respectively.
Top end wall 25 is provided with a
V-shaped cut-out aperture 27 extending inwards from side wall 21 to terminate in an innermost portion comprising a semi circular apex 28 in the middle of wall 25.
The diameter of the apex 28 is substantially equal to the diameter of the bottle neck 11.
Consequently when the bottle is in the carton, the neck 11 is held and embraced by the apex 28 of the aperture 27. Further, when the neck is so held, further security of the bottle in the carton may be provided b arranging the screwthreading of the neck and the screw top 13 so that the screw top, when screwed down, will nip the fibreboard of the end wall 25 in the vicinity of the apex ag;iinst the end 12 of the bottle.
Referring to Figure 3. the carton is folded from a fibreboard blank 29 having tlap and wall panels corresponding to the walls and flaps described with reference to Figures 1 and 2.
To assemble the container construction of the invention, the blank 29 is folded in the usual fashion along the folds indicated by chain lines to the carton configuration shown in Figure 1, flaps 21a and 21b being left open. The bottle 10 is then inserted through the open side left by the open flaps in the direction of arrow 8 so that the bottle neck is guided bv the V-shaped aperture to the apex 28. Flaps 21a and 21b are then closed to form the carton side wall 21 and sealed bv a gum strip (not shown). The configuration shown bv Figure 2 will now have been achieved.
Other embodiments of the invention may easily be envisaged.
For example. tne casing may be a simple
rectangular carton having a circular aperture in an end wall. the bottle being inserted into the casing from the opposite end to the apertured end wall so that the bottled neck projects through the aperture. In a modificaion of this. the apertured end wall may be of crash-lock design.
In a further embodiment the casing is a rr cm n-rular carton of which, initially, only an apel-lured end wall and a side wall are erected. The bottle is placed on the inner face of the side wall with its neck projecting through the aperture in the end wall. and then the remaining side walls and the remaining end wall. which a.e '.hlged to the first mentioned side wall, are closed round the bottle.
A common feature of all the embodiments of the invention is that when the bottle is in the casing its neck projects through the aperture and the bottle is held firmlv by the cap clamping the edge of the
aperture against the shoulder of the bottle.
The advantages of the invention are that it is possible to have a combination pack comprising a very flimsy plastics necked bottle enclosed in a fibreboard casing, thus saving a large quantity ot plastics in the construction. and allow in the embodiment described with reference to the drawings, to provide the user with the capability to view the contents of the bottle (if its material is translucent or transparent) through the Vshaped aperture in the end wall of the carton.
