Vagorizers, external.-Spray carburettors and induction pipes are heated at starting by products of combustion from a small chamber 13 which pass through a coil 14 inside the carburettor or a jacket around it and then enter the induction pipe, or the products may enter the induction pipe direct. The valve 15 which admits the products to the induction pipe is open only when the throttle valve 12 to which it is connected is nearly or quite closed, so that the suction created by the engine piston at starting draws in a current of air at 17 which is impregnated with oil from the nozzle 16 is ignited by electric sparks at 21 and mixes with supplementary air entering through the valve 23 and the holes in the casing 22. The current supplied to the sparking gap 21 is also controlled bv the movement of the valve 15. In alternative forms the air may enter at 17 through an automatic valve or a valve connected resiliently to the throttle valve 12 so that the valves 15 and 23 may be dispensed with. The igniter comprises two separately insulated electrodes 21 whose terminals turn upwards so that the liquid shall not bridge the gap.
