PATENT t? iinrrnn sinuses LESTER ELECTRICAL VAPORKZER TTCHMENT FR GAS-ENG'NES.
Specification of Letters atent.
Application filed tanusry 6, 19M. Serial No. 810,591.
To ali 'whom it may concern:
Ee it known that u citizen of the United States, und. a resident oLaurinburg, county of Scotland,
` 5 State of North Qarolinzi, have invented ceris und Fig. 3 is o. similar view of n modificotion.
My invention has relation to that class oi internal combustion engines in which gasoiene or other liquid hydrocarbon 'is mixed so with to form the charge which is ei;-
jploded in the several combustion chambers ot the engine, and my improvements are designed to provide u simple ineens ior sup-` plying e preliminary or supplemental sup- 25 jiply of the liquid hydrocarbon to the intake of the engine and vooorizing the sume for the purpose-of starting the engine, when the parte of the engine are too cold. to eilect e starting; of the engine in the usual wuy,
es more fully hereinafter set forth.
intake conduit or manifold, between t f1 o5 trie Referring to the drawing by referencecheracters, a designates :i smell tank 'for gssolene or other hydrocarbon, this tank being adapted to be located at any point above .5 the point of vapor-ization so that the hydrooiiihon will run by gravity to the v'uporineix A. sniull pipe I).4 controlled by i cock c., connects this tank with *he vnporizinp; coil which is located at any suitable point in th Y usual carburetor d und the intake end a. the manifold.
The vaporizing device consists of e nlug "screwed into an opening in the wall o manifold ond having connection with the supply'pipe From the end oi the supply pipe extends n duct g which ter- 'niinotes at the inner foce of the plug. Cen: trally through the plug extends o. rod li to whose inner end is provided with u hoed z' and whose outer end is provided with o nui" il tiibe c of non-conducting nioteriel insulstes this rod from the nietzil plug, und between the head c and the onse of the plug;
M5 is located another cylinder Z of insulating materiel. The bolt ,t serves to clamp against l5, Lnsinu L. Forum,
'ample supply of vsp-criceti the base of lthe plug a inetollic tube m, e. metal disk or washer n being provided to abut against the lower or inner end of tube m, this disk n being insulated from the bolt by insulating washer o. llitliin the tube m is located another cylinder o of insulziting material, and between the two cylinders Z and m is coiled o conducting wire g'whose lower end is electrically connected to the lower end of rod k and whose upper end is electrically connected to the cylinder m.
The insulating par s It, Z, m und o are dcsirably nitide oi' mico or other A heute-esisting insulating material. The upper end of the metal tube has electrical connection to the plug,r f so that when the wires 'from the battery are connected respectively to the rod 7i und metal pipe b or other port of the engine or freine having metallic connection to plug y", on electric circuit is established through coii y and suiiicient heat is thereby generated in the coil to nent the metal tube m to :i degree suflicient to vapori/ze gzisolcnc. lt will therefore be seen that to i'ztporizc gusoiene in the intake, it is siinply necessary to iii-st close the buttery circuit for o Suii cient length oi time to bring the tube 'm to the necessary degree of teniperyiture und then open coclr c to permit the' gosoiene to grovitnte through the plug und Spread upon the exterior of the hot cylinder fm. il suitable switch s is provided for closing 'the latter circuit.
lt will be observed that my device is ere ceediiigly simple in construction and adapted to be applied to any engine by siniply tapping; threaded holes in the intuire :it the desired point between the moin carbuietei und the intake ports of the The device is incl; visive in crroiruction and muy be reodiiy 'teiten apart ing und' repair. Tie arrangement the gosolene is supplied t and spi-end thereupon insures not un ggfeisolenes but also a quien vn'porizetion of the gssolene. it will be seen also that this device inoy used not only .for ifiiporizing; o. pi'eliniinni'y supply of fuel, hut also is capable of is ing the main carburetor in voporicing i'uel in certain weather conditions where such es sistzince is highly desirable,
ln the i'orin oi device sicuro the clamp bolt L is mede hoi being; designated by roteren and 'the supply pipe b is connected i W, i 1 Hellboy n n. .1. m.. o the not time in g3 1,1oo
outer encl thereof7 'that the gusolene will he conducted to the interior of the coil and fuporized tl'ier'ein` the vapor issuing from the ogen einl of the tube 7L ut the inner end ot the coil, This construction (loes away with the duet y; :unl requires that the terminals ot the Coil q shall extend through the plug f :unl be insulated therefrom. The cylinder my is clamped against the base of the plugl by nieunslojt' nut m :toting through the medium of the washer 2".
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. In nn apparatus of the class set forth, :i metallic plug adapted 't0 be inserted in the intake of an internal combustion engine, 'this said plugl being provided with an opening through it andk also with et duct lending to its inner end, means for supplying gasolene to said duet, a rod' extending through the openingin said plug'7 anelectrio generator wired 'respectively to rod snel 'to said plug, :i metallic vaporizing tube surroiuicling said rod and abutting vagainst the inner end of the said plug, ineens cooperating with sind rod for closing' the inner enti of seid tuberand removably clamping it in pluee against the plug, and :in electric Coil inelosed within sind tube and insulated from,
the rod and also from said tube and having 30 on@ end connected to saic'i rod and the other end to said tube, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device of the class set forth, n plug n'lapterl to be inserted in the intake olf :in
internal. combustion eneine s @Vlinder ubut- 35 ting` against the inner end of the 'plug and' projeeting` into'the interior of the intake, a heating coil insulntively inelosed Within said Cylinder, e rofl extending through the plug und said cylinder, und means cooperating 40 therewith for closing the inner end. of seid cylinder and reinovfiblj;T clamping said cylinfler against the end of the plug1 ineens for transmitting an eleetrio Current through smid coil, und means for suppiying hydro- 45 Trios.
