(54) DOMESTIC SINK UNIT WITH A STRAINING DEVICE (71) We, APPARATENFABRIEK ATAG B.V., a company organized under the Laws of The Netherlands, of 20, Bongersstraat, Ulft, The Netherlands do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:unit for washing, rinsing, straining, and similar operations, in particular of such articles as kitchen utensils and foodstuffs especially vegetables and fruit.

It is important in, for example, washing to be able to spray water constantly on the articles to be washed and it is therefore necessary to provide the sink unit with an outlet, which is also important for straining the washed articles. The sink unit should furthermore be suitable for handling both large and small articles such as fruit or finely cut vegetables.

In accordance with the present invention a domestic sink unit comprises a basin with a drain outlet at its base and a sieve supported on the rim of the basin to cover substantially the whole area of the basin, the sieve hanging down in the form of a basket inside the basin.

The sieve may be formed by a fine-mesh gauze basket provided around its top edge with an uninterrupted supporting flange bearing on the top edge of the basin.

Usually prior to washing, vegetables are cut. The sieve may for this purpose be partly covered by a cutting board. The opening left free by the cutting board can receive the cut vegetables from the cutting board. The sieve and its supporting flange may be integrally made from a synthetic resin, but as an alternative the sieve may be made of a metal and the supporting flange may be made from a synthetic resin.

The invention will be described more fully by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is an elevation, with parts shown in section, of an embodiment of the invention taken on the line I-I in Fig, 2, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1.

A basin 1, made from stainless steel, is installed as a kitchen sink unit. In the basin 1 a sieve 2 is suspended. The sieve 2 may be made of stainless steel or of a synthetic resin.

Around its top edge the sieve 2 has a supporting flange 3, which bears on the rim of the basin 1. The sieve 2 is partly covered by a cutting board 4, there being an opening 5 allowing access to the sieve. In use, vegetables may be cut on the board 4 and passed through the opening 5 into the sieve. The basin communicates with an outlet 6 for draining the water supplied from a tap 7.

The sieve 2 and its supporting flange 3 may be integrally made from a synthetic resin. As an alternative, the sieve 2 may be made of stainless steel, whereas the supporting flange 3 is made from a synthetic resin.

WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A domestic sink unit comprising a basin with a drain outlet at its base and a sieve supported on the rim of the basin to cover substantially the whole area of the basin, the sieve hanging down in the form of a basket inside the basin.

2. A sink unit as claimed in claim 1 wherein the sieve is provided with a flange around its upper edge, the flange engaging the rim of the basin to support the sieve.

3. A sink unit according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the sieve and its flange are formed integrally from a synthetic resin.

4. A sink unit according to any preceding claim, wherein the sieve is partly covered by a cutting board.

5. A domestic sink unit substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
