Abstract

A beam splitter (16) with a semi-reflecting interface is arranged in the beam path between the bottle bottom, which is illuminated by a light source (4), and the two photoelectronic scanning devices (10, 11 and 17). The beam splitter (16) transmits an image of the bottle bottom to each scanning device (10, 11 and 17). The first scanning device (10, 11) inspects at least the edge region of the bottle bottom and the second scanning device (17) inspects at least the central region of the bottle bottom, the inspection regions of the two scanning devices partially overlapping each another. As a result of this, the sensitivity of the apparatus is completely independent of the position of the foreign body on the bottle bottom and a high degree of reliability is achieved in the detection of foreign bodies, even in drinks bottles which are in continuous motion. <IMAGE>
