Abstract

1494426 Inspecting cap seals photo-electrically PHYSITRONIK GERATEBAU GmbH 1 April 1975 [30 March 1974] 13231/75 Heading G1A To inspect a seal formed in a cap, e.g. a bottle cap, the cap is rotated while being illuminated with mono-chromatic light; light reflected from the seal is detected and compared with a pre-set value so that if there is a defect in the seal the cap is rejected. The seal 2, Fig. 1, is formed in the cap by applying a sealing composition over the bottom of the cap; in use, an annular portion 4 of the seal will contact the rim of the bottle to be closed, and it is this portion which is illuminated by a suitably sized light spot or line, 5 or 6 respectively. The defects to be detected are generally holes in the seal, and the illuminating wavelength is chosen so that the seal and the cap have differing reflectivities at that wavelength. The incident and reflected rays may travel along separate paths, Fig. 3, (not shown), or may be combined by a beam-splitter 12, Fig. 4 (not shown); an equivalent of (Fig. 4) may be formed using fibre optics, Fig. 7 (not shown). The detector signal is gated so that it is used only when the cap has built up to full rotational speed, and the cap is' preferably examined for more than 360 degrees rotation. The light source may be continuous or pulsed, the latter case requiring a relationship between pulse rate and speed of rotation so that enough pulses occur during cap rotation. When the illumination is not of a visible wavelength, a visible source may be provided to aid initial alignment so that a desired annular region of the seal can be inspected.
