Abstract

The focussing drive (4) is moved into an initial position by manual tripping by the observer or by automatic tripping at prescribed instants. The search run starts in the opposite direction starting from said position. At the same time, a specific high-frequency band whose signal intensity is used as an objective criterion for the image contrast is filtered (8) from the video signal of the camera and rectified (10). Upon overshooting of the optimal focussing, the image has maximum contrast, and the rectified signal therefore achieves a maximum. Thereupon, the drive (4) is reversed and there is backward motion at the same speed over a specific time interval. This interval is fixed by the instants of the maximum detection of the rectified signal and of the reversal of the drive. <IMAGE>
