Driving-gear.-Relates to engines in which the piston is connected to the crank through a vibratory beam, the connecting-link between the piston and beam having a variable point of connexion with the beam, and consists in mounting the beam on or near the cylinder head remote from the crank and in jointing the connecting-link to a cross-head sliding in guides in the engine crankcase. In the form shown, the cross-head 8 on the piston-rod 3 slides on a fixed guide 4, and is connected by a pair of rods 7 to a block 9 adjustable by means of a screw 18 along a slot 6<1> in an arm 6 pivoted at 15 to the cylinder head. A non- adjustable point on the arm 6 is pivotally connected by a pair of rods 11 to the cranks 10, the crank-shaft being mounted laterally of the engine, and geared to the fly-wheel 36 by gears 35. The rotation of the screw 18 to adjust the block 9 is effected from a pedal 20, Fig. 6, through g'ea-ring 22, 23, 24 driving a sprocket 25 and thereby producing rotation of a screw 16 which drives the screw 18 through a helical gear sprocket 17, Fig. 1. The piston 2 and cross-head 8 are lubricated by a device comprising a hollow guiderod 4, upon which slides the piston-rod 3, the rod 4 communicating at its lower end with lubricant in the crank case 4. The pump action of the piston-rod sliding on the guide rod draws up the lubricant, and delivers it through ball valves 29, 31 to ducts 30, 32 communicating respectively with the cross-head 8 and piston 2. An application to an automobile four-cylinder engine is described.
