Sparking-plugs are made by packing a powdered insulating-material, such as fused magnesia, quartz, mica, or alumina. around a rod 18 placed centrally in a tube 5, and swaging or drawing down the whole until the powder is compressed into a hard, solid mass. Insulating-heads 7, 8, which may be of porcelain, are secured to the ends of the shell by caps 11, 14, in order to prevent the insulation from crumbling, and the heads may have ribs 9 in order to increase the surface in contact with compressed insulation. The manufacture is carried out with a long tube and central rod, the whole being cut into suitable short lengths after swaging.
