Abstract
1537067 Universal joints LOHR & BROMKAMP GmbH 16 Dec 1975 [23 Dec 1974] 51395/75 Heading F2U In a constant-velocity universal joint, having torque-transmitting balls 1 engaged in grooves 2 within an outer joint member 5 and in grooves 3 around an inner joint member 6, and having a ball cage 4, 4b which retains the centres of the balls in a plane normal to the longitudinal axis of the cage, this plane being caused to bisect the included angle between the axes of the outer and inner members, the ball grooves may either extend parallel to the rotational axis of the respective member or alternatively may be curved such that the groove centreline lies in a plane including that axis, and the number of balls is at least six and is divisible by a whole number greater than one and less than the number of balls, and the grooves of each joint member are so disposed about the joint axis that they form an odd number of three or more groups of grooves, the angle between centres of adjacent grooves of two different groups being greater than, but less than double, the angle between centres of adjacent grooves within one group, all such angles being those subtended at the joint centre. During use of the joint, guidance of the ball cage into the angle-bisecting plane is associated with cyclic variations of forces exerted on the cage by balls as they roll in the grooves, and it is stated that this close spacing of balls within a group causes the cyclic force variations to be minimised.
