Abstract

1536562 Laminates BICC Ltd 12 Feb 1976 [13 Feb 1975 14 Feb 1975] 6221/75 and 6365/75 Heading B5N A method of making a laminate comprises incorporating in a composition comprising an ethylene homopolymer, a copolymer derived from a mixture of monomers including at least 50 mol per cent ethylene and at least 75 mol per cent ethylene and propylene combined, or in a post-chlorinated derivative of such a polymer, (a) a free radical generator capable of generating a predetermined number of free radical sites in the polymer when decomposed by heating and, (b) a silane SiRY 2 R<SP>1</SP>, where R is a monovalent olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon or hydrocarbonoxyl radical, Y a hydrolizable organic radical and R<SP>1</SP> is R, Y or a methyl group, in an amount sufficient to react with substantially all the free radical sites; heating the mixture to decompose at least a major proportion of the generator to form freeradical sites in the polymer and react predominantly by grafting with the silane without cross-linking, applying the composition in a heat-softened condition to paper or cloth and then subjecting it to the combined action of a silanol condensation catalyst and water to produce a cross-linked polymer. The comonomer may be vinyl acetate or ethylacrylate, the generator 1,3 - bis - (α - t - butylperoxyisopropyl)benzene or dicumyl peroxide, the silane vinyl trimethoxysilane and the catalyst dibutyl tin dilaurate or a titanium ester. The plastics layer may be applied as a preformed layer or by extrusion, optionally being sandwiched between two layers of paper or cloth.
