Abstract

1315617 Electrically conductive films ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP 23 Nov 1971 [14 Dec 1970] 54352/71 Heading B5B [Also in Divisions C3 and H1] Electrically conductive films having a volume resistivity of less than 10 ohm cm., a softening point above 200‹ F. and an ultimate tensile strength greater than 2500 p.s.i. and made of compositions comprising 35 to 65 weight per cent of electrically conductive carbon black in a polymer matrix comprising predominantly a grafted block copolymer of polyethylene and butyl rubber in a weight ratio of polyethylene to butyl rubber of 9 : 1 to 1 : 1 may be prepared by calendering or extruding the composition. In an example a film is prepared by calendering a composition of carbon black and a reaction product of polyethylene containing 2% of copolymerized butene, butyl rubber and a bifunctional phenolic grafting vehicle. The films may be used to provide electrostatic shielding in cables, as heating elements and particularly as current collectors in flat cell LeclanchÚ batteries.
