Abstract

1455589 High impact strength thermoplastic compositions GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 19 Dec 1973 [29 Dec 1972] 58895/73 Headings C3G C3P and C3R High impact strength thermoplastic compositions comprise (a) a polyphenylene ether and (b) a rubber modified polystyrene, the composition having a dispersed particulate rubber phase in which the particles have a mean diameter not exceeding 2 microns, and containing not less than 22 weight per cent of a particulate rubber gel phase, on a polyphenylene ether-free basis, dispersed in a polystyrene matrix, the rubber comprising a polybutadiene having a cis-1,4 content of at least 50 weight per cent and a vinyl group content of no more than 10 weight per cent based on the polybutadiene. The polyphenylene ethers may be self-condensation products of monohydric monocyclic phenols, particularly ortho dialkyl phenols, prepared by reacting the phenols with oxygen in the presence of complex copper catalysts. The rubber modified styrene polymer may be obtained by polymerizing styrene, or an alpha- or nuclear alkyl- or halo-styrene, in the presence of dissolved rubber whereby is obtained a microgel of rubber particles, which may be grafted, in a matrix of polystyrene. The compositions may also contain plasticizers, fillers, pigments, stabilizers and flame retardants, and may be made into films, fibres and mouldings. Examples describe the preparation of rubber modified polystyrene by subjecting solutions of polybutadiene in styrene to bulk followed by suspension polymerizations, and of compositions comprising rubber modified polystyrene, poly-α-methyl styrene, poly-α-chlorostyrene or styrene/acrylonitrile, styrene/methyl methacrylate or styrene/ acrylonitrile / α - methylstyrene copolymer together with poly-(2,6-dimethyl-, 2,6-diethyl-, 2- methyl - 6 - ethyl -, 2 - methyl - 6 - propyl -, 2,6- dipropyl - and 2 - ethyl - 6 - propyl - 1,4 - phenylene) ether, and additives selected from polyethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, tridecyl phosphite, triphenyl phosphate, titanium dioxide, zinc sulphide, carbon black and lubricant.
