Abstract

1422208 Polyphenylene ether-rubber modified polystyrene compositions GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 21 Aug 1973 [23 Aug 1972] 39397/73 Headings C3G C3P and C3R Thermoplastic compositions -having high impact strength comprise (1) a polyphenylene ether resin and (2) a -rubber modified polystyrene resin comprising a polystyrene matrix in which is uniformly dispersed a discontinuous phase comprising particles of styrene homopolymer or a mixture of styrene polymers englobulated in diene rubber membranes, the particles having an average size of 0À1 to 0À7 micron, the membrane thickness being not greater than a quarter of the average particle diameter and the diene rubber content being 1 to 10% by weight of the rubber modified polystyrene. The-phenylene nuclei in the polyether may contain halogen, hydrocarbon, halohydrocarbon, hydrocarbonoxy or halohydrocarbonoxy substituents, and the polyether may have a degree of polymerization of at least 50. The modified polystyrene may be prepared by bulk prepolymerizing a solution of a natural or synthetic diene rubber, particularly polybutadiene or a butadiene/styrene copolymer, in styrene or an alkyl- or halostyrene to phase inversion and continuing the polymerization in aqueous suspension. In examples a -solution of polybutadiene or styrene/butadine copolymer rubber in styrene is bulk prepolymerized in the presence of 3,5-dit-butyl :phenol, benzoyl peroxide and dicumyl peroxide, and the polymerization completed (in aqueous suspension in the presence of gelatine, mineral oil and sodium lauryl sulphate. The products are blended with poly(2,6-dimethyl-, 2,6- diethyl, 2-methyl-6-ethyl-, 2-methyl-6-propyl-, 2,6-dipropyl- and 2-ethyl-6-propyl-1,4-phenylene)ethers.
