Abstract

1535868 Exhaust gas recirculation; IC engine combustion chambers NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 25 May 1976 [30 May 1975] 21605/76 Heading F1B An I.C. engine comprises a piston 18 having a depression 18d in its crown which forms at least three quarters of the volume of a combustion chamber 20 defined between the surface of the piston crown and a cylinder head 16 when the piston is at TDC, means 28 for recirculating engine exhaust gases being provided. The surface (16a) Fig. 3 (not shown) of the cylinder head bounding the combustion chamber 20 may be dished and form up to one quarter of the combustion chamber's volume. The combustion chamber 20 may have two spark-plugs 30a, 30b or an auxiliary combustion chamber (32) Fig. 4 (not shown) may be provided. The maximum exhaust gas recirculation rate is in the range 5% to 30% by volume of the intake air.
