Abstract

1535199 Aerobic fermentations using plastics cushions &c. SPOFA UNITED PHARMACEUTICAL WORKS 24 Dec 1975 [29 Dec 1974] 52790/75 Heading C6F A method of aerobically cultivating microorganisms involves the steps of providing a nutrient medium within an internally sterile container or cushion formed by sealing the ends of a tube of plastics material e.g. polyethylene and having an inlet tube extending through the tube wall, inoculating the medium with micro-organisms and supplying air to the container through the inlet tube. Holes are formed through the top wall of the container by piercing it with a sterile spike and the air admitted in the inlet tube is exhausted through the pierced holes, keeping the cushion inflated. The cultivation may be performed with the container on a support plate in the form of a horizontal platform provided with temperature control means.
