Abstract

1489000 Utilizing heat and carbon dioxide from fermentations H MULLER 13 March 1975 [14 March 1974 26 March 1974 25 June 1974] 10591/75 Heading C6F [Also in Division A1] Heat and carbon dioxide evolved during the growth of a micro-organism, especially thermophilic strains, by a fermentation process in an aqueous nutrient medium are used in controlling the temperature and composition of media (gaseous and liquid) in which green plants are growing e.g. in a greenhouse. The slight over-pressure of carbondioxide-containing gas may be used to maintain inflated a movable greenhouse formed of sheets of a plastics material. In a modification, heat evolved from the fermentation medium is applied for drying the microbial product or sterilizing the nutrient medium prior to the fermentation. An enclosed system comprising a heat exchange fluid and a heat pump is used.
