Abstract

1401956 Growing yeast &c. in tower fermenters MARMITE Ltd 11 Dec 1972 [11 Sept 1971] 37712/71 Heading C6F In a process for the growth of yeast or another aerobic micro-organism comprising introducing an aqueous nutrient medium continuously or semicontinuously into a culture vessel of vertically elongated shape (height at least 5 or 10 times the internal diameter) such that the medium passes upwardly along its length, an oxygen-containing gas being introduced into the medium e.g. from the bottom of the culture vessel, the yeast &c. is maintained in suspension at a concentration substantially uniform along the flow-path of the aqueous medium up the vessel. The input of fresh nutrient medium is adjusted so that the concentration of the yeast &c. in the spent medium is the same as the concentration in the culture vessel. Raw, unsterilized feed medium e.g. whey, waste sugar liquor or corn steep liquor, may be used after the micro-organism has established itself. The culture vessel may have heat exchange jacketing whereby to modify the temperature of the nutrient medium and yeast &c. growth in the various parts of the vessel. The top of the culture vessel leads directly into a coaxial expansion chamber with a weir for the discharging of spent medium. Actual dimensions are given. Several culture vessels may be connected in series. Micro-organisms: Non-flocculent strains of yeast, antibiotic-producing fungi, and bacteria. The Examples are directed to the cultivation of Saccharomyces fragilis and Aspergillus sp., respectively .
