Abstract

1534736 Bonding and modifying fabrics by transfer printing; spot bonded non-woven fabric IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 23 Sept 1977 [11 Oct 1976] 42120/76 Addition to 1498254 Headings DIB D1P and D1R A method of bonding a fabric, preferably a non-woven fibrous web, comprising distributed meltable thermoplastic material, and of applying to the fabric at least one modifying agent to enhance or impart one or more of the following properties: resistance to the accumulation of static, flame retardancy, pigmentation, dye receptivity, metallic lustre, flocked appearance, electrical conductivity, transmission of heat, and resistance to degradation by light, the method comprising contacting the said fabric with a transfer sheet supporting at least one modifying agent, and subjecting the sheet and fabric to the action of heat and pressure in spaced discrete areas, whereby the thermoplastic material becomes adhesive and thereby bends the fabric, and the modifying agent is simultaneously transferred onto the fabric at least in areas corresponding to the discrete areas. In the examples, polyester bicomponent fibres are treated with a transfer sheet bearing a flame retarding agent or a vacuum deposited chrome metal.
