Abstract
1534359 Membranes containing inorganic ion exchange materials KURENA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 24 March 1976 [31 March 1975 27 June 1975 14 July 1975 29 July 1975] 11883/76 Headings C3L and C3V [Also in Division C7] A cation exchange membrane of a fluorinated polymer containing sulphonic, carboxylic or phenolic groups has dispersed therein homogeneously or only in a surface layer thereof 0À1 to 30% by weight of a water insoluble inorganic ion exchange material which is a hydrated oxide, hydroxide, molybdate, tungstate or phosphate and which may be formed in situ in the membrane. The examples describe membranes of fluorinated polymers containing sulphonic groups containing Zr phosphate prepared by reacting phosphoric acid with the membrane impregnated with zirconyl chloride or nitrate; Ti hydroxide, Ce hydroxide or molybdate or Zr hydroxide or such membranes containing Zr phosphate only in a surface layer prepared by contacting a surface of the membrane with filter paper impregnated with (a) zirconyl chloride and then (b) phosphoric acid.
