Abstract

1532437 Securing pierce nuts; punching AUDEL Ltd 14 March 1977 [17 Dec 1975] 51611/75 Headings B3H and B3W A die 12 for securing a deformable element, e.g. a pierce nut to a sheet, in which the sheet is positioned adjacent the die and the element is forced into the sheet from the side remote from the die so that part of the element enters the die to be deformed by the die to secure it to the sheet, comprises a plurality of relatively movable parts 13, 14 facilitating removal of the deformed element from the die. When the die parts 13, 14 are in contact they present a continuous cutting edge 16 surrounding a square aperture 17 having an arcuate intrusion provided by a part spherical pocket (18) in each corner, Fig. 1 (not shown). A metal sheet is positioned on top of the die and a pierce-nut having a pilot portion corresponding in size to the cutting edge 16 is forced into the sheet so that the pilot portion punches through it and enters the die. The exterior of the die parts 13, 14 is frusto-conical, so that as the nut and sheet are raised after securing, the die parts are lifted thereby enabling them to be moved apart. On the next operation they are forced downwardly and brought together again.
