Abstract

1531136 Hot gas engines PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN NV 27 Oct 1975 [6 Nov 1974] 44109/75 Heading F1S [Also in Division F4] A hot gas engine has three or more cylinders 2, two only of which are shown, and a swash plate drive mechanism comprising a swash-plate 10 mounted on a rotatable drive-shaft 11 for rotation therewith and drive rods 8 connected one to each of the pistons 1 of the engine and co-operating with the swash-plate through members 9 which are in sliding contact with the swash-plate, the latter. being tiltable about an axis 12 extending transversely of the drive-shaft to adjust the swash-plate angle. The swash-plate is coupled to a spring mechanism 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, and 27 which is arranged to exert a torque on the swash-plate about the tilting axis in opposition to the torque exerted thereon about the tilting axis by the working medium of the engine through the pistons I thereof, the torque exerted by the spring mechanism being substantially equal to, and varying with the swashplate angle at substantially the same rate as the torque exerted by the working medium. Alternative forms of the spring mechanism are described. The springs may be replaced by pistons supported by gas buffers.
