Abstract

1530462 Photographic processes NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 30 March 1976 [1 April 1975] 13253/75 Heading G2X Method and apparatus for photographically processing sheet material 18 as it is fed past opposite walls of a vessel 10a, wherein liquid is directed to the surface of material 18 facing the vessel 10a and suction is applied within vessel 10a to cause air-flow between material 18 and at least one of the walls and the air-flow strips the liquid from the surface of material 18 and conveys it to vessel 10a, so that material 18 leaves vessel 10a substantially dry. A second vessel 10b is placed symmetrically with respect to vessel 10a so that material 18 is fed between the vessels by two sets of feedrollers 2, 3 and 5, 6. Material 18 may pass progressively between further pairs of vessels 11a, 11b, 12a, 12b, 13a, 13b. Vessel 10a has two walls 19a, 19b joined at the top and mounted between end-plates (20, 21), Fig.2, (not shown), to form an outer chamber 19. The base of vessel 10a comprises strips 25-28 extending between plates (20, 21). An inner housing 24 is fixed to strips 26, 27. Liquid, e.g. developer is pumped by pump 33 from a reservoir 35 to pipe 32 to inner housing 24 and its counterpart in vessel 10b. Developer is thus applied to both sides of material 18. Suction is produced in chamber 19 and its counterpart by a pipe 36 leading to a space above the liquid in reservoir 35, which space is connected to a vacuum chamber 38. The liquid spreads in both directions along material 18, and is stripped off by the suction between strips 25, 26 and 27, 28. After development the material may pass to vessels 11a, 11b, 12a, 12b, 13a, 13b, of slightly different construction, which are connected to the vacuum chamber 38 and to reservoirs 53, 61, 65 containing respectively fixer, washing and fixer eliminating liquid, and washing liquid (water). The material emerges substantially dry and may be placed on a table 4, or may go to a further drier. The photographic material is fed in by a table 1, which is then closed by a lid 70 so that the machine may subsequently operate in full light.
