Abstract

1530120 Making battery plates CHLORIDE GROUP Ltd 20 Oct 1975 [18 Oct 1974 23 Dec 1974 15 Oct 1975] 45241/74 55500/74 and 42226/75 Heading H1B Battery plates are made by filling porous, (tubular) envelopes with a mixture of, e.g. grey and red lead by mounting the envelopes between clamps in a pivoted frame 20 (Fig. 2, not shown) and feeding a slurry of the lead material from a stirred tank 10, through a manifold 24, to the envelopes which filter the slurry and return the water to the tank. The envelopes are made of non-woven polyester fibres. A valve 23 allows the slurry to be recirculated back to the tank. A pressure indicator 22 may be used to control the apparatus automatically. The lead materials may be partly sulphated. In a modification (Figs. 10 to 19, not shown) several filling manifolds are fed from one agitated slurry tank, which has a weighing control to automatically feed lead material to the tank. The process of making the electrodes may also be applied to alkaline batteries using nylon fabric or porous steel tubes with nickel hydroxide for the positive plate and cadmium or iron hydroxide for the negative plate, each containing Ni or 5 to 15% graphite. The electrolyte may be KOH with LiOH. The process may also be used for primary batteries using Zn Fe, Cd, Mg, HgO or Ni with Cd or carbon electrodes with or without Cu or manganese dioxide. In specific examples the material may be (by weight) 76% Cd hydroxide, 5% Cd, 15% iron oxide, 2% graphite, and 2% paraffin or 85% Ni hydroxide with 15% graphite. Many examples are included giving details of the viscosity, the water-solids ratio, and the size of particles of the slurry, the porosity of the envelopes, and times, pressures and volumes of pumping.
