Abstract

Compounds of formula III <IMAGE> wherein COR<2> is an acyl radical of a carboxylic acid and R<8> is hydrogen, an organic radical or a cation of a pharmaceutically tolerated salt are prepared by reacting a carboxylic acid of formula R<2>-CO2-H (V> or its reactive functional acylating derivative with a compound corresponding to formula III but containing a hydrogen atom instead of COR<2>. Uses of the process according to the invention are directed to the removal of a radical R<8> cleavable by hydrogenation, and to the hydrogenation of the group -CH2OC-OR<2> to give a CH3 group. The compounds prepared find pharmacological applications since they inhibit beta -lactamase. They are also suitable for use as intermediates for the preparation of other pharmacologically useful substances.
