Abstract

1528578 Position indicating apparatus NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 17 Nov 1975 [20 Nov 1974 27 May 1975] 50200/74 and 23141/75 Heading G1N An apparatus for generating a signal representative of a co-ordinate of a movable indicating member 10 which is constructed to interact with magnetic flux comprises a plurality of sensing or driving coils 15 positioned substantially in or adjacent to a surface in or adjacent to which the indicating member 10 may be moved, and being positioned to divide an area of interest in the surface into regions with each region within an arrangement of coils 15 particular to that region and a further coil surrounding the entire area of interest. Means responsive to the change in flux linking the coils and the indicating member provide a signal representative of the co-ordinate of the indicating member. The coils may overlap or be positioned side by side. Several examples of combinations of superimposed coils in embodiments of the invention are disclosed, Figs. 6 to 8 (not shown). Each coil may correspond to a function in a set of independent binary functions, or a function in a set of Walsh functions or a number in a series of numbers forming a pseudo random sequence of such numbers or a number in a row or column of a Hedanard matrix. The indicating member may be a magnet of a coil surrounding a magnetic material, Figs. 9a and 9b (not shown) and in the latter case the member is a ball point pen, pressure on the ball causing a switch to close to allow energization of the coil. A flux guide 16 may be provided.
