[Also in Division G1] A travel measuring arrangement suitable for use in the control of machine tools comprises a scale formed of equally spaced portions 4 of a material of high permeability, and a residing head 1, having gaps 2, 3, which is magnetized by a permanent magnet or by A.C. or D.C. applied to coil 7 at terminals 8, 9 includes a Hall generator 12, and is arranged to traverse the scale. Pulses thus produced are applied to a counter to effect the measurement. The widths of the portions 4 of the scale in the direction of movement are equal, and equal to the widths of the head gaps which are spaced by two units of the scale division or any desired multiple of two units. The scale may be a recessed block of material of high permeability, produced by cutting or stamping, or by etching a foil adhesively secured to a non- magnetic backing. Alternatively the webs themselves may be applied to the backing. A vernier arrangement using a number of heads spaced differently from the scale divisions, in which the magnetization of the individual heads may be switched on or off, is described for positioning the member to which they are attached relative to a member to which the scale is attached, the leading head being energized for setting, with the aid of a counter, to the right section of the scale and another head being subsequently energized say No. 4 of 10 at 9/ 10 th intervals and set for maximum output reading to position the member at N and <SP>4</SP>/ 10 th intervals. The application of the scale to a drum or a disc and the direct use of the machine bed or carriage as a scale are also described.
