Abstract

1527146 Electrostatic precipitators SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd 17 Dec 1975 [20 Dec 1974] 51745/75 Heading B2J [Also in Division Cl] An electrostatic filter includes at least one electrode for example the precipitation electrode only or both the positive and negative electrode comprising an electrically conductive facing of compacted graphite foil which is secured by adhesive to a substrate of plastics material. The plastics substrate may be in the form of a tube or a plate. The compacted graphite foil may be made by oxidising coarsely crystalline natural graphite with fuming nitric acid or with a sulphuric acid/nitric acid mixture, and then it is hydrolised. The oxidised graphite is heated, whereupon it decomposes and the resultant separated carbon layers are then joined together by mechanical pressure, e.g. by rolling. Such foils, e.g. from 0.08 to 0.4 mm thick when used singly have a certain flexibilty, however such layers may be combined to form a laminate. An example is given where such an electrostatic filter is used to clean the waste gases resulting from the treatment of an aluminium melt with elementary chlorine.
