Abstract

1526701 Centrifugal separators R K PETERSEN 12 Jan 1977 [13 Dec 1976 12 Jan 1976] 01138/77 Headings BIT and B2P In a separator, air containing entrained particulates is drawn, by suction applied at passage 315, through a screen 336 into an inlet chamber 340. The large particulates are separated from the air by the screen and the air and small particulates pass through a vane assembly 321 which directs them in whirling fashion into a separation chamber 319 where the heavier particulates are separated out by centrifugal force against a housing wall 318 and pass with a small proportion of the air into an annular chamber 377 from which they are expelled by rotating impellers 371-374 through tangential outlet openings 378 in the wall 343 of a base member 344. The impellers 371-374 are secured to the outer ends of radial arms 366-369 mounted on spinner blades 357-360. The blades are carried on a hub 352 rotatably mounted on a rod 345 and extend into the passage 315. The major portion of the air containing light particulates is sucked through the passage 315 and, due to its whirling movement, causes rapid rotation of the blades 357-360 and, hence, of the impellers 371-374. Modifications of the separator are described. The separator may be used as an air precleaner for an i.c. engine or as an air cleaner for a burner.
