Abstract

1526225 Screw heads GKN FASTENERS Ltd 26 Oct 1976 [29 Oct 1975] 44524/75 Heading F2H A screw has a driving recess with three or more generally radial driving faces 13, each face having a plurality of grooves 17 between which are defined ridges 15, the grooves and ridges extending substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the screw from the mouth of the recess towards a base region thereof. Preferably the back-out driving faces 14 have similar grooves and ridges. The grooves and ridges have an arcuate cross-section in a plane normal to the screw axis, and are formed to lie outside notional planes 11a marking the walls of known smooth-sided recesses, so that a standard screwdriver can be used with the driving recess of the present invention. In the cruciform recess shown, the base 11 of each wing of the recess slopes inwards from the mouth of the recess to a central well 10, the grooves and recesses reaching to the base 11. The width of each wing may taper slightly towards the base.
