Abstract

1526050 Pneumatic separation H RUMPF 16 Sept 1975 [17 Sept 1974] 38078/75 Heading B2H A method of classifying particulate material below 1mm in size comprises projecting the material in a thin layer and at a velocity greater than 5m/sec into a sifting gas current E directed transversely to the initial direction of proiection of the material so that the material is spread out by the current and is separated into two or more fractions by one or more blades 11, 15, 26, 48, 49 without previously rebounding from any wall, and withdrawing a portion T of the sifting gas immediately after the material charging point and in a direction having a component directed opposite to the material input direction. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the particulate material is projected into the sifting zone 2 by means of two conveyor belts 6 and 7. The sifting gas enters the zone 2 via a flow straightener 5 and nozzle 4 and leaves via ducts 1 and 14. The fine material passes into the duct 14, the middle material into the duct 1, and the coarse material is collected in a receptacle 10 which in a modification, is provided with an air outlet (33) Fig. 4 (not shown). The positions of the blades 11 and 15 are adjustable. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, the material is fed to the sifting zone 2 by a pneumatic device 20 comprising a hopper 22 and an injector nozzle 23. One or other of the middle fractions may be returned to the sifting zone to improve the separation. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5, the material is fed to an annular sifting zone by a centrifugal plate 42 and the sifting gas is fed to the said zone through two coaxial annular nozzles 43 and 44. In another embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the sifting gas flows upwardly to and from an annular sifting zone. Some of the sifting gas e.g. that carrying away the middle fraction, may be recirculated to the sifting zone after removal of the particulate material therefrom Fig. 7 (not shown).
