Abstract
152,598. Shann, M. H. Churchill-. Oct. 17, 1919, [Convention date]. Rigging; sails.-The square sails 10 are located in pairs right and left of the mast and can be reefed together towards the middle, the sails being provided at their running edges with clips working in guides on the yards 5 and the reefing being effected by ropes 14 which pass round spring-supported pulleys 20 to differential drums operated by an electric motor 18. Vertical rope ladders 12 are secured between the yards and are provided with clips to which the sails are secured. The yards are pivotally mounted on brackets 9 attached to the mast, and are provided with hand-rails 28 connected by life-lines which protect the edges of the brackets 9. The yards on the individual masts are simultaneously trimmed by wire ropes 6 attached to their extremities, the bight being rove round friction drums 4 carried by the adjacent mast. The standing stays of the mast are carried round inboard brackets with a view to enable the yards to be braced more sharply.
