Abstract

1524961 Solar heaters; ventilating buildings R O POSTGATE 13 Aug 1975 [13 May 1974 24 May 1974 (2)] 21035/74 23212/74 and 23399/74 Headings F4U and F4V A solar heater comprises a panel having an absorber element of sheet material formed so as to have surfaces inclined so as to provide multiple-reflections of the incident energy. The absorber element is provided with a black surface. As shown in Fig. 2, the absorber element is formed of aluminium foil and is mounted in a frame 12 beneath a transparent cover 14, the frame having an inlet 16 and an outlet 17 for air and its base being covered with insulating material. The absorber element may alternatively be adapted to form channels for the passage of water, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown). The solar heater panel may form part of the roof structure of a building, Fig. 7 (not shown). The absorber element may alternatively consist of cone shaped elements 60, Fig. 10, fitted together between a transparent layer 61 and a tension sheet 62. Air is brought into contact with the elements 60 through apertures 65 or 66 and cones 67 may be provided within the elements. As shown in Fig. 8, air is passed through a solar heater on the roof of a building provided with ducts 32, 33, 35, 40 and a thermal storage element 39. The down duct 35 is provided with a fan 36 controlled by a thermostat 37 and warm air can be discharged into a living room through a controllable vent 38 or into the thermal storage element 39. The duct 32 may have a filtered fresh air intake 41 and a vent 42 may be provided to allow hot air to escape after passing over a water heating pipe 34, when house heating is not required.
