Abstract

1524056 Controlling burners PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN NV 24 Nov 1975 [27 Nov 1974] 48193/75 Heading F4T A burner 4 is supplied with gas through a manually-operated valve 13 in series with a solenoid valve 7 which is biased closed, which may be opened manually and which is maintained open when manual operation is ceased if an electric circuit, which is supplied with D.C., is completed by ionic flux generated by a flame in the burner, thereby energizing solenoid 10 of the valve 7. To start the burner knob 12 is depressed to open the valve 7 and is rotated to open tap 13. If the burner is ignited ionic flux between electrodes E1 and E2, constituted by the burner body 4 and a metal foil 16 insulated therefrom, causes current to flow in the coil 10 and maintains the valve 7 open even when the knob 12 is released; if the ionic flux ceases the coil 10 is de-energized and the valve 7 is closed by spring 11. The circuit, Fig. 2, which is supplied with D.C. either from the mains via a transformer and rectifier or from a battery, includes a first integrated circuit ICI for amplifying the current from the electrodes and rendering transistor TR1 conductive so that current flows in the coil SV (and in pilot bulb LS), and a second integrated circuit IC2 to render transistor TR2 conductive and prevent energization of the coil if the electrodes are inadvertently short-circuited. A capacitor C1 provides a delay in response of the circuit to allow ignition time.
