Abstract

1,263,191. Burner controls. HARPER WYMAN CO. 3 June, 1969 [5 July, 1968], No. 27981/69. Heading F4T. An ignition system for a burner 42 e.g. in a gas oven 44, with fuel supplied from a manifold 48 via a valve 110 and an electromagnetic valve 56, has the primary winding 74 of a transformer 72 connected to power supply terminals 66, 68 and is characterized in that the control coil 54 of valve 56, a fuse 78 and an electrical resistance igniter 64 adjacent the burner are connected with the transformer secondary winding in a series circuit loop. It is arranged that valve 56 is not opened unless enough current e.g. four amps, flows to render the igniter sufficiently hot, while if the igniter is short circuited, the fuse 78 blows, e.g. at 8 amps. In an example, the transformer was fed from 120 volts, and was rated at 10 amps, 3À75 volts, a current of five amps flowed in the secondary circuit with three volts across the igniter, which then reached about 2600‹ F. in one second. The valve 110 is part of a thermostatic control including a fluid filled bulb 104 in the oven, and a control knob 112, and a cam 116 coupled to knob 112 operates a switch 114 in the transformer primary circuit. In another embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), a conventional valve replaces the thermostatic valve 110 while an oven thermostat of the fluid filled bulb type operates a switch in the transformer primary circuit. If more than one burner is provided, the corresponding igniters are connected in series.
