Abstract
The incompletely-hydrated alkali cellulose to be converted into viscose, and subsequently into a spun material resembling wool or cotton, according to the parent Specification, is, in the case of well-opened cellulose, prepared simply by immersing the cellulose for a short time in caustic alkali lye, without any subsequent maturing, that is, the alkali cellulose immediately after pressing to remove excess lye, is treated with carbon disulphide; by this modification a more woolly and stronger spun material is obtained. The cellulose is opened by thorough boiling, and the time of immersion in the soda lye is, in the case of a material in the form of flock, about ten minutes, and in the case of a matted material, two hours may be necessary. The quality of the spun material is further improved by reducing the proportion of carbon disulphide, and by increasing the cellulose contents of the spinning solution. The preparation of the alkali cellulose may be carried out at normal temperature; but during the subsequent stages a somewhat lower temperature should be maintained. The viscose solution is spun in an unripened condition. Specification 1378/12 is referred to.
