Abstract
1522681 Controlling light NATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CORP 30 Dec 1975 [6 Jan 1975 26 June 1975] 496/75 and 27180/75 Heading G2F Nematic liquid crystal material with positive dielectric aristropy in a layer of thickness sufficient for surface introduction alignment effects to be unable to extend through its entire volume is selectively subjected either to a first field producing substantially uniform unidirectional molecular alignment, or to a second field producing a molecular alignment which provides a refractive index gradient capable of refracting light with a polarization direction in a plane containing the gradient, whereby the light may be deflected (e.g. the alignment of Fig. 3) or focused, Fig. 4. The alignments of Figs. 3 and 4 are obtained using four electrodes (at the corners of the figures) with the polarities shown. A magnetic field may be used in lieu of the electric field. An arrangement comprising eight electrodes at the corners of a cube, e.g. for two-dimensional deflection, is described. Instead of using spaced electrodes, potentials may be applied to each end of a resistive electrode strip.
