Abstract
1522661 Utilizing wave energy K BUDAL and J FALNES 2 July 1975 [4 July 1974] 27837/75 Heading F1S Apparatus for the conversion of sea wave energy comprises a movable member, termed an interacting member, which is made of solid or elastic material and which is an integral part of a damped oscillating system which comprises an energy absorbing mechanism which is adapted to produce usable energy and/or dissipate energy and the interacting member interacts with the waves and thereby is subjected to oscillating forces from the waves so as to make the oscillating system oscillate. A flywheel is so coupled to the interacting member as to add to the effective mass of the oscillating system to the effect that the natural frequency of the system is made essentially equal to the characteristic frequency of the sea waves. In a modification the flywheel is replaced by drive means adapted to impart an oscillating movement to the interacting member. As shown a tank 1 is kept in position by a wire, chain or the like 2 which is passed over rollers 3 and 4 and secured to a buoyant member 6. The roller 3 is associated with a flywheel 7 which again is associated with an electrical generator in any convenient manner. Fig. 5 (not shown) relates to an embodiment comprising a pair of gas filled tanks. One tank is provided with a movable or flexible wall portion which is the interacting member and is positioned below the sea surface. A conduit joining the tanks is provided with a turbine associated with a generator.
