Abstract

The swell of the ocean is used to move air in a closed space formed by an inverted bell partially immersed in the sea. The air movement drives turbines coupled by free wheel mechanisms to electric generators (23,24). A sealed column (4) supports the inverted bell and a circular disc (7) supported by rods (6) protects the float. Anchor cables (33) fix the position of the station in the sea. Two turbines (21,22) are placed in ducts (15,16) in which valves (19,20) control the air flow. As a wave passes, one valve (19) allows air to enter the bell at the trough of the wave and the second valve (20) allows air to leave the bell at the wave crest. A freewheel mechanism coupling the turbines to the generators allows the generators to continue to rotate while the turbine is stationary. An electronic inverter controls the electric output which is transmitted by underwater cable.
