Abstract
1522494 Embossing ADREMA PITNEY BOWES GmbH 1 Oct 1975 [1 Oct 1974 25 April 1975] 40140/75 Heading G4H An embossing machine comprises a rotatable head 3 carrying N embossing dies 8, a coded drum 6 (or a disc) with electro-optical readers 9 giving a coded signal y representing that one of the dies currently in the operative position, a keyboard 1 for selecting a die and providing a coded signal x representing its address, and comparator logic 10 which determines in which direction the head 3 should be rotated to bring the selected die to the operative position by the shortest route. The logic 10 also detects occurrence of equality between x and y to disconnect the drive and apply the appropriate band brake 19 or 20. Shortest path logic.-In Fig. 2, x and y are compared in comparators 43, 44 giving outputs as indicated, circuit 46 deriving a code representing the absolute difference between x and y, which is compared at 47 with N/2. The head is driven in one direction if x>y and | x-y | <N/2 or x<y and | x-y | >N/2, otherwise in the opposite direction. In another arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown) y is loaded into a counter (29), incremented by clock pulses until it equals x, the number of clock pulses required being counted (32) and stored (36). y is again loaded into the counter (29), decremented by clock pulses until it equals x, the number of clock pulses required being counted and stored (37). The lower of the two stored counts determines the direction. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown) the number of incrementing clock pulses needed to make equality is compared (40) with N/2. Direction may be decided as soon as equality is reached or the number of incrementing clock pulses reaches N/2, whichever occurs sooner. In another modification, Fig. 5 (not shown) the conuter (29) is incremented or decremented according as y is < or > N/2. The dies 8 may be arranged in the head 3 according to their statistical frequency of use.
