1522161 Computer controlled reproducing machines XEROX CORP 11 Aug 1975 [12 Aug 1974 (5)] 33369/75 Heading B6 [Also in Division G3] A digital computer 200 controls an electrostatic copier 5 e.g. a machine which produces images on either or both sides of copy material. Machine 5 has duplicate processors 7, 7<SP>1</SP> and the original document being reproduced is formed as a transparent film strip (Fig. 4, not shown) with book &c. page images arranged in series thereon, the strip coming from a cassette. The strip is indexed across a transplaten (14, Fig. 3, not shown), which can accommodate two frames at once, and is flash exposed to project optical light images via optics to photoconductive belts 20, 20<SP>1</SP> charged by corona generators 22, 22<SP>1</SP> before imaging at exposure stations 23, 23<SP>1</SP> and development at stations 24, 24<SP>1</SP>. The developed image is transferred to one or other side of web 28 at transfer station 25, 25<SP>1</SP> and residual developer removed at cleaning station 29, 29<SP>1</SP>. The film strip can be previously prepared off line using a camera which photographs the pages of the original documents on to the strips and a web cutting station is also provided (Fig. 7, not shown) using a guillotine knife. The computer 200 comprises an operator console 500 (Fig. 1B, not shown) and an interface 203 through which commands are passed to the machine. The operator can indicate image impression length and the appropriate space (i.e. the pitch) and the computer calculates the time intervals between the specific events in the process, which intervals are stored in memory 205. The process is controlled using counter 209 and the computer receives various sensor outputs to confirm that the various process steps have been effected. The console 500 can specify run sizes, lengths &c. and has error detection and control display. The computer is a standard mini-computer and its program is described at some length (Figs. 15-28, not shown). As the computer is relatively fast, the input can be scanned several times and a composite result obtained. This is stated to reduce the effects of electrical noise, switch debounce and rollover problems.
