Abstract

1521128 Ion-exchange ROHM & HAAS CO 30. Oct 1975 44794/75 Addition to 1311642 Heading B1J [Also in Division C3] The desalination or deionisation of water is carried out using an ion exchange resin comprising a crosslinked macroreticular host copolymer, the pores of which contain separately formed crosslinked filling copolymer, both polymers containing ion exchange functional groups, the functional groups on the host copolymer being of opposing functionality to those on the filling copolymer. Examples are given in which the resins used are prepared by a) copolymerisation of methyl acrylate and divinyl benzene and/ or diethyleneglycol divinyl ether in the pores of styrene/divinyl benzene copolymer, the product being subjected to chloroethylation followed by aminolysis with dimethylamine-, b) copolymerisation of ethyl acrylate, divinyl benzene and the said divinyl ether in the pores of a copolymer as in a); The product being treated as in a); c) copolymerisation of monomers as in b) in the pores of vinyl benzyl chloride/divinyl benzene copolymer and aminolysis of the product, as in a); d) copolymerisation of dimethyl itaconate, divinyl benzene and the said divinyl ether in the pores of styrene/divinyl benzene copolymer and treatment of the product as in a).
