An ionizable polymer comprises a formamidine cation and a polymeric anion derived from a sulphonic acid type cation-exchange resin. In the example formamidine hydrochloride was treated with a sulphonated cross-linked styrene/ divinylbenzene copolymer as follows:- where R is the resin anion.
