Abstract

Effluent is fed through a feed orifice (11) into the bottom part of a cylindrical fluidised bed column (10) through a distributor tube (13). Above the distributor tube is situated the fluidised bed composed of a support composed of solid particles having microorganisms bound to them. The fluidised bed, to which oxygen is fed, receives the effluent and converts the ammonia nitrogen to be removed from this into oxidised forms of nitrogen (for example nitrites or nitrates). The effluent thus treated and the oxidised forms of the nitrogen are discharged through an outlet (12). The excess cell material is removed from the particulate support. <IMAGE>
