Abstract
1520172 Laminates HONNY CHEMICALS CO Ltd 8 March 1976 09242/76 Heading B5N In a process for bonding rubber to a ferrous metal substrate, copper is deposited on the substrate followed by an adhesive layer comprising an interpolymer derived from 40 to 99% of one or more conjugated dienes, from 1 to 45% by weight of one or more vinyl-substituted heterocyclic bases and from 0 to 40% by weight of one or more additional copolymerizable monomers, contacting the adhesive layer with a curable rubber composition and uniting the rubber with the substrate by the application of heat and pressure. The copper coating may be applied by electroless plating, e.g. by dipping or by electroplating. Many suitable dienes and additional monomers are specified, the heterocyclic bases being preferably of the pyridine, quinoline and isoquinoline series containing only one CH 2 =C< substituent and the rubber may be natural rubber, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, a copolymer of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile, or polychloroprene. The substrate. may be in the form of wire, the process being applicable in the manufacture of steel reinforced tyres, belts and hoses.
